The Folly of Trusting in Riches.

For the choir director. A Psalm of the sons of Korah.

1 ^aHear this, all peoples;
Give ear, all ^binhabitants of the world,
2 Both ^clow and high,
Rich and poor together.
3 My mouth will ^dspeak wisdom,
And the meditation of my heart will be ^eunderstanding.
4 I will incline my ear to ^fa proverb;
^gI will ^{▼▼ Lit open up}express my ⁱriddle on the harp.

5 Why should I ^jfear in days of adversity,
When the iniquity of my ^{▼▼ Lit supplanters}foes surrounds me,
6 Even those who ^ltrust in their wealth
And boast in the abundance of their riches?
7 No man can by any means ^mredeem his brother
Or give to God a ⁿransom for him—
8 For ^othe redemption of ^{▼▼ Lit their}his soul is costly,
And he should cease trying forever—
9 That he should ^qlive on eternally,
That he should not ^{▼▼ Or see corruption or the pit
,} ^sundergo decay.

10 For he sees that even ^twise men die;
The ^ustupid and the senseless alike perish
And ^vleave their wealth to others.
11 Their ^{▼▼ Some versions read graves are their houses
,} ^xinner thought is that their houses ^yare forever
And their dwelling places to all generations;
They have ^zcalled their lands after their own names.
12 But ^aaman in his ^{▼▼ Lit honor}pomp will not endure;
He is like the ^{▼▼ Or animals}beasts that ^{▼▼ Lit are destroyed}perish.

13 This is the ^aeway of those who are foolish,
And of those after them who ^afapprove their words. ^{▼▼ Selah may mean: Pause, Crescendo or Musical interlude}Selah.
14 As sheep they are appointed ^ahfor ^{▼▼ I.e. the nether world}Sheol;
Death shall be their shepherd;
And the ^ajupright shall rule over them in the morning,
And their form shall be for ^{▼▼ I.e. the nether world}Sheol ^alto consume
^{▼▼ Lit Away from his habitation}So that they have no habitation.
15 But God will ^anredeem my soul from the ^{▼▼ Lit hand}power of ^{▼▼ I.e. the nether world}Sheol,
For ^aqHe will receive me. Selah.

16 Do not be afraid ^arwhen a man becomes rich,
When the ^{▼▼ Or wealth}glory of his house is increased;
17 For when he dies he will ^atcarry nothing away;
His ^{▼▼ Or wealth}glory will not descend after him.
18 Though while he lives he ^avcongratulates ^{▼▼ Lit his soul}himself—
And though men praise you when you do well for yourself—
19 ^{▼▼ Lit You; or It}He shall ^aygo to the generation of his fathers;
They will never see ^azthe light.
20 ^baMan in his ^{▼▼ Lit honor}pomp, yet without understanding,
Is ^bclike the ^{▼▼ Or animals}beasts that ^{▼▼ Lit are destroyed}perish.
